What is Traditional Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation. The theory is to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of energy through the body.
1. How does it work?

The effectiveness of acupuncture is still a myth, biomedical researchers all over the world are still working hard to dig out its mechanism.

However, acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. – John Hopkins University

In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, a network of channels (also called meridians) connects all parts of the body. This network forms a system that regulates all the body functions such as organ functions or defending against pathogens. There are 361 acupuncture points that have been identified and standardised by WHO (World Health Organization ).

Our acupuncturists are experienced in choosing these points( according to your symptoms) and stimulating them by using either needles or other methods.
2. Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture is usually pain-free. Some people may feel a slight dull ache, warmth, itchiness or a heaviness sensation, which is normal and is called a “De Qi” reaction from acupuncture meaning acquiring Qi (Energy).
3. How about hygiene?
Acupuncture needles used at Louts health are single-use, sterile and pre-packaged. It is illegal to re-use acupuncture needles. We follow the strict regulations from the Australian Chinese Medicine Registration Board, which state that Acupuncture needles are single-use only. After treatment, Acupuncture needles are disposed of in a medical sharps waste container.
